With the 40-year wilderness wandering over, the people assemble in Kadesh-Barnea in preparation for entering the Promised Land. But there's not enough water, and the new generation of Israelites complains. God tells Moses to get his staff, he and Aaron are to assemble the people, and Moses is to speak to the rock to bring forth water. But Moses chides the people and strikes the rock. Because he did not trust God enough to do what God told him to do in a formative moment in the lives of a new generation, God denied Moses and Aaron the opportunity to enter the Promised Land
