Because the Jews could not execute Jesus, they sent Him to Pilate, but Pilate found no reason to have Him executed. When the Jewish leaders persisted, claiming that, if he were to release Jesus, he would be supporting opposition to the Emperor, he gave in and handed Jesus over to them to be crucified.
