After Peter confesses that Jesus is the Christ, He began to tell His disciples about what would follow. When Peter heard Him say He would be killed, Peter rebuked Him. Jesus took that teaching moment to explain to His disciples what discipleship requires—a complete renunciation of worldly pleasures and pursuits and following Him with a total commitment of heart, soul, mind, and strength. Anything less will not bring the Lord's acceptance in the Day of Judgment.
